Footballers took time out of their busy training schedule to lift the spirits of children in Whipps Cross Hosptial.

The annual Leyton Orient visit to the Acorn ward was a huge success again this year with every child getting a present from the players.

Club mascot Theo was joined by players Romain Vincelot and Nathan Clarke on the ward as they handed out signed merchandise and other gifts, on Thursday.

Pat Hunt, Ward Manager, Acorn ward said:  “Leyton Orient are our local team and are always so supportive – there are a lot of fans here including staff who enjoy seeing them each year and the kids loved Theo.

"It can be such a difficult time for our children and families so to see their faces light up with excitement at opening the presents and seeing their local heroes is fantastic.

The players took time to have photos taken and sign autographs which for one family of die-hard O’s supporters was a real Christmas treat.

Skipper Nathan Clarke said: "It's always a pleasure giving the children something to smile about. It's never nice being in hospital especially at this time of year so anything we can do to cheer them up is most worthwhile.

"Our visits here are always well received and I think we (players) take as much out of the day as the children and staff.”

Spurs first team players Christian Eriksen, Nacer Chadli and Vlad Chiriches, and ladies team player, Avilla Bergin, also visited.

“It is always enjoyed by everyone and has such a positive impact even if only for the day, it’s remembered for a lot longer.”

Nacer Chadli said: "There were some Spurs fans on the ward, and it was nice to see them wearing their colours for our visit.”

Christian Eriksen said: "It was great to see so many young kids excited that we were visiting, and no doubt it was even better for those who were Spurs fans.

“There was one boy who only arrived on the ward today and was wearing his Spurs shirt - I think he was a little lost for words when we walked in.”
