A shop banned from selling alcohol six weeks ago has applied for a new licence.

Pats Mini Market, in Winns Avenue, Walthamstow, had its licence revoked on November 3 after Trading Standards officers found counterfeit alcohol on sale.

The shop, which is owned by Selvaninayagam Varatharajan, was visited by officers in February.

Around 164 bottles of wine, 15 bottles of whisky and six bottles of vodka were seized.

It was later confirmed that 14.7 litres of spirits had been stamped with counterfeit customs labels and 123 bottles of wine were suspected of having no duty paid on them.

No invoice could be found for the alcohol.

Now Mr Ramanan Thillanathan has applied for a licence for the shop.

However, the council’s licensing department believe he is not a new member of staff.

A report by licensing officer Marc Witham said: “The application provides no information indicating when Mr Thilanathan became the leaseholder at the premises.

“However, on October 17 2014 I visited the premises to hand deliver documents relating to the above review application.

“The documents were handed to a man who I believe to be the applicant, and as this predates the review hearing we have concerns that Mr Thilanathan was involved in the operation of the business at the time of the alcohol seizure, and therefore have doubts regarding his suitability to hold a premises licence.”

At present, the application requests a licence between 7am and 11pm every day.

The council’s licensing committee will consider the application on December 23 at the town hall.

Pats Mini Market is still selling alcohol as an appeal was lodged, meaning it can do so until a final decision is made.
