The number of people travelling on the underground is at a record level and is set to rise further, figures have revealed.

Figures published by London Underground (LU) between July 20 to October 11 show passenger numbers on the Tube were up by 8 million in total across this period, compared to the same period last year.

Last week was the busiest on the Tube in its history, with over 28.346 million people using the service.

In the financial year of 2013/14, the service carried 1.265bn passengers and the numbers are up by a third over the last 10 years.

London's population is set to grow from its current 8.4m to around 10m by 2030.

Phil Hufton, LU's chief operating officer, said: “We're carrying record numbers of people on our network and, as these figures demonstrate, the number of customers is set to rise further.

“This is why it is vital that we continue our drive to improve reliability and continue with our programme to modernise the Tube.”
