A great-grandfather who is thought to be the oldest living UK Cypriot has celebrated his 108th birthday with family and friends.

Michael Klanga, born on New Year's Day in 1907, is believed to be the tenth oldest man in Britain and third oldest in London, according to the website, Oldest in Britain.

The survivor of two World Wars and youngest of 12 siblings moved to London from the small town of Analyonda in Nicosia in 1956, with his late-wife Maria and their seven children.

In 1962, at the age of 55, he opened MC Klanga delicatessen in Camden Road, which he continued to run until he retired in his 80s.

He lived in Sinclair Road, Chingford, from the 1980s but moved to Anastasia Lodge care home in Enfield in 2010.

In November, he featured alongside eight other centenarians in a photo shoot by world-famous photographer David Bailey for the Observer newspaper.

And up until six months ago, Mr Klanga enjoyed his guilty pleasure of drinking red wine with every meal - a reason his family says why he has lived for so long.

Grandson Chris Michael, 50, of Heathcote Grove, said he was "humbled" by the work of his grandfather's carers, and added: "He has always loved a drop of whiskey or red wine and his love of singing and dancing meant he was always the centre of attention at parties.

"I am one of very few in this world to be able to say my grandfather is alive and kicking at 108."

Life-long friend Costas Mingides, 86, said Mr Klanga's "relaxed" attitude to life and upbringing in Cyprus put him in good stead for living a long and prosperous life.

Anastasia Lodge manager Norma Dimaiwat said he still has it.

She said: "He needs assistant with all of his personal care and communicates only in Greek.

"But at this marvellous age, he is still going strong and his family should feel lucky to still have him around.

"Just last week, he was dancing at a post-Christmas party at Saint Demetrios Church in Edmonton."

He was joined last night by his seven children, 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
