A young musician has beaten competition from hundreds of talented children to win a place in the Young Orchestra for London.

Frederick Bremer schoolboy Joshua Rivet, 11, will play the cello in the 100-piece group in the orchestra led by world famous conductor Sir Simon Rattle.

It is a joint education project between Southbank Centre and Barbican Guildhall in collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra.

It forms part of the Berlin Philharmonic 2015 London Residency.

The group will perform at the Barbican Centre and Southbank Centre next month.

Headteacher Jenny Smith said: “We are delighted that Joshua’s musical talent has been recognised and that he has been given the opportunity to be a part of the this incredible project.

“Joshua’s talents are a testament to his hard work, commitment, passion for the cello and the support provided by staff. I would like to thank the Music Department and everyone else who is working with Joshua as rehearses for the upcoming performances.”

Frederick Bremer School in Siddeley Road featured in the popular Channel 4 ‘Educating the East End’ show last year.

As part of the course musicians have the opportunity to play alongside and learn from the world renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, members of the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
