Commuters face travel disruption today as bus drivers strike over pay.

Members of the Unite union started the 24-hour walk-out at 4am today.

An estimated 44 of the 673 bus routes in London are expected to operate.

TfL have said the only route in Waltham Forest not affected today is the 66 from Romford Station to Leytonstone Station.

The union is protesting over variations in pay among drivers working for different operators.

Only 16 per cent of bus drivers voted in favour of the action, but unite says it has the backing of commuters.

London regional officer for Unite, Wayne King, said: "London’s bus operators have raked in millions in profits while driving down pay and refusing to tackle pay inequality on the capital’s buses.

"Strike action is the last resort. We’ve been forced into this position by the operators’ refusal to even meet with us.

TfL's managing director of surface transport, Leon Daniels, said: "It is extremely disappointing that Unite has decided to threaten unnecessary disruption, especially given the low turnout for the ballot and low numbers voting for the strike.

"Bus drivers' pay and conditions are a matter for the bus companies and Unite to discuss, as it has been for 20 years, and we would urge them to seek a swift and fair resolution for the sake of our passengers."

All Tube lines are currently operating a good service.
