Up to 1,200 new parking spaces for cycles will be introduced as part of Waltham Forest’s so-called mini Holland scheme.

The spaces will be created over the next two years as the £30million scheme to improve cycling facilities is implemented to handle the expected increase in demand.

The council will also introduce cycle lockers in residential streets, which take up a single parking space, in ten locations.

Deputy council leader and cabinet member for environment, Clyde Loakes, said: “It’s important that we work to not only address the requirements of the cycling community as it stands, but that we work to increase that community and address all of the issues that might be preventing more people from taking to two wheels.

“We’re looking for residents to tell us where the gaps are based upon their experience of the borough.”

The mini-Holland scheme, which will see traffic routes reconfigured, has proved controversial, with critics claiming a lack of consultation and problems with congestion, while others welcomed the proposals.
