The public has been warned to "stay well clear" of overhead power lines following heavy winds overnight.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning yesterday for London and the south-east of England, with heavy rainfall and gusts of up to 65mph.

There may be disruption to travel this morning due to standing water and spray.

A spokesman for UK Power Networks said:  “Our electricity network is built to be resilient but extreme weather can affect overhead power lines.

“Our emergency plans have been put in to place with hundreds of extra engineers and other staff on duty to deal with situations as and when they arise.

“In communication with customers, we urge the public to stay well clear from power lines.”

People who have spotted a damaged power line are being asked to alert engineers on 0800 31 63 105.
