A ceremony has been planned for Holocaust day on the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

The event will take place at 11am on January 27 at the Holocaust memorial garden, at Valentines Park, Ilford.

Representatives from the Redbridge council, schools from around the borough, faith groups and residents will join together to honour the memory of those affected by genocide and to pay tribute to those who lost their lives.

Approximately six million Jews were killed by the Nazi regime in the Second World War, with around one million of those murdered at Auschwitz in Poland.

The event will be opened by Mayor of Redbridge Cllr Ashley Kissin and council leader Cllr Jas Athwal will also make a speech.

There will be readings and prayers of remembrance as well as the laying of wreaths at the Holocaust memorial stone.

Students of schools across Redbridge will read out poems.
