There are fears someone could be killed on a road where drivers ignore size restrictions, unless safety measures are introduced.

Residents spoke out this week over Hoe Lane in Abridge, which is said to be regularly used by large vehicles and articulated lorries, despite a 7ft 6ins width restriction.

Sarah Norden, headteacher of Lambourne Primary School in Abridge, is among those calling for action.

She said: “The road outside of my school is very narrow and unsuitable for this type of vehicle.

“Our children use the local area regularly and cross the road directly outside of school.

“There is no pedestrian crossing so we rely on the children and staff to cross safely.

“A lot of Hoe Lane does not have pavements and therefore parents, staff and pupils have to walk in the road, which again means the large vehicles cause even more threat to the safety of all concerned.

“Hoe Lane needs some form of traffic calming measure introduced, along with weight restrictions to help keep our children and parents safe and avoid a serious accident from occurring.”

Vice chairman of Lambourne Parish Council, Charles Portou, said he has spoken to Essex Highways a number of times about the issue and fears there could be a fatality if something is not done.

He said: “It’s not just pupils that this road is affecting, it’s the safety of motorists and home owners.

“The lorries are coming down Hoe Lane after being guided to do so from the M25 or the A414, someone will be killed if safety measures are not implemented.

“What will it take for something to be done? A child’s life?”

Essex Highways has been approached for comment.
