Secondary schools in Waltham Forest will produce their own league tables this year in an attempt to give parents a better understanding of performance.

Head teachers from eight schools have agreed to produce GCSE results in advance of government tables.

The Buxton School, Walthamstow Academy and Chingford Foundation School are amongst over 750 schools nationally that have joined together in an initiative by education groups ASCL, NAHT, the PiXL Club and United Learning.

According to schools, the Department for Education tables are misleading as they give pupil’s first GCSE grades, rather than their final result including re-takes.

This was changed in 2013.

Kath Wheeler, executive headteacher of Buxton School, said: “It is important that parents and other stakeholders gain a thorough understanding of the results of our schools.

“These tables aim to give a broader picture than the DfE tables have been able to do.”

Parents will also be able to comment on what specific information they want from the schools before selecting where to send their child via the website.

Emma Skae, principal of Walthamstow Academy, said: “Anything that gives parents better information about what a school can provide for their child is a good thing and we are very pleased to be involved in this initiative.

“Exam results are always a high priority for parents in choosing a school but they are also as interested in the other ways in which their child will develop during their time here.

“That is why the scale and scope of activities, the ethos of the school and the ways in which we bring out the best in their child are so important to them. These tables will I hope ultimately be able to detail this wider benefit.”

The results, published at www.schoolperformancetables.org.uk will allow parents to compare up to five schools at once.

Results will be published later this year.
