There are calls for action at an underpass beneath the busy North Circular which is said to be constantly flooded.

The subway, which joins Hall Lane and Shadbolt Avenue in Chingford, is used daily by cyclists, commuters and customers of nearby businesses.

It is currently flooded with a foot-and-a-half of water, and the only alternative for crossing the A406 is to take a "suicidal" route across Cooks Ferry Roundabout or cross a footbridge half a mile in the opposite direction.

SafeStore customer Sean Sexton, 68, of Forest Road, Walthamstow, said: "This is highest I have ever seen it.

"I had to walk a mile just to cross the road. I am a fit guy but this is ridiculous."

Mr Sexton said he witnessed a young woman this morning cross the underpass by clinging to a ledge three inches above the water level.

Cyclist Marek Lisowski, 60, of Chingford, uses the route daily for cycling along the River Lea, travelling to Edmonton and visiting Costco.

"The underpass is vital - it is the only say to cross the North Circular and get the 34 bus," he said.

"When it rains, it floods and is a complete nuisance.

"Each time this happens I have to take my life in my hands and use the suicidal half-baked cycle path at Cooks Ferry Roundabout.

"They need to find a long-term solution."

Transport for London maintains the underpass and says it has sent a team to clear the water.
