A driver whose van was said to have mounted the pavement and nearly hit a pedestrian has denied dangerous driving.

Ian Martin, 48, of Dove House Gardens, Chingford, appeared at Thames Magistrates Court today accused of over the incident at around 6.30pm on September 5.

Prosecuting Muneeb Akram, told the court: "Sparks were seen coming off the wheels of the white transit van as it drove through New Road.

"Both tyres were flat and the van was seen swaying left to right before hitting the kerb and mounting the pavement.

"It went straight through a bus stop, nearly hitting a pedestrian. A woman walking on the pavement held her arms out fearing she would be hit.

Mr Akram accused Martin of driving "recklessly and at an excessive speed" before he allegedly pulled over in a car park and "opened the door and fell onto his face".

Martin has been released on unconditional bail to stand trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court on February 3.
