The fire service has warned about the danger of fireworks after a fire at a house in Walthamstow last week.

A man had to be rescued from a block of flats in Longfellow Road after a blaze in his five-room flat on Thursday, which is believed to have been caused after a firework went off in the property.

The man was rescued via a ladder from a rear balcony by crews wearing breathing apparatus. He was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by the London Ambulance Service.

Emergency services were called at 3pm to deal with the fire in the hallway on the first floor.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "This incident shows how dangerous fireworks can be. If you are planning to have fireworks at home, please always follow the firework safety code."

Firefighters from Walthamstow and Stoke Newington fire stations attended the incident.

The fire was under control by 4pm.
