Damon Albarn has admitted being "fascinated" by Alice in Wonderland after it was announced he had co-written a stage musical to celebrate its 150th anniversary.

The show, which is named Wonder.land, will premiere in July at the Manchester International Festival before moving to London's National Theatre in November.

The singer,  who lived in Leytonstone as a child, has written the music for the modern day adaption of Lewis Carroll’s story, following 12-year-old Aly, who creates an online alter-ego as Alice and loses herself in a virtual world.

Playwright Moira Buffini has written the lyrics and script.

In late October, the Blur singer unveiled a blue plaque on his former home at 21 Fillebrook Road, Leytonstone.

The 46-year-old lived in the house until he was nine-years-old and attended George Tomlinson Primary School, in Harrington Road.

Albarn’s recent Mercury-nominated album, Everyday Robots, recalls his early childhood living in Fillebrook Road and one of the songs is entitled Hollow Ponds.

He said: "I'm fascinated by the idea of going down a rabbit hole, the otherworldliness and what that might mean.

"Alice aside, The Queen of Hearts, The Duchess, White Rabbit, Caterpillar were the most threatening characters of my childhood.

"I was genuinely very frightened of them as a kid, which is probably why I was interested when Alex Poots suggested a reworking.”
