A rogue landlord was fined £7,500 for putting tenants at risk in an unsafe property.

Salim Ahmed, of High Road, Ilford, was convicted of nineteen separate offences relating to one property, including housing multiple tenants without a licence.

The High Road property was inspected by Redbridge council following a report that people were living in the basement and loft space.

An upper floor was found to be poorly constructed as a living and storage area.

Mr Ahmed was sentenced at Barkingside Magistrates Court on January 9.

Labour Cllr Muhammed Javed, cabinet member for housing said: "I am aware of the shortages of housing in the borough and some landlords take advantage of the situation.

“Sadly, there are some rogue landlords out there who are illegally renting out unsafe premises to vulnerable tenants and where we identify such unlicensed properties those responsible will be prosecuted and our success rate is extremely high.
