A pensioner who admitted causing the death of a cyclist last year has been sent to crown court for sentencing.

Kevin Lane, 52, of Rainham, Essex, was mowed down on the High Road on February 9 as he turned right out of Bunces Lane.

Marjorie Tappenden, of St Ronans Crescent in Woodford Green, was driving with her husband when she allegedly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal.

The partner of Mr Lane, Angela Cook, 35, has called on the courts to ban Tappenden from getting behind the wheel again.

She told the Evening Standard: "I don’t ever want her to drive again, and I think there needs to be a minimum of a suspended sentence for her.

"If it was someone who was 35 or 45, I would be expecting them to go to prison. I realise she is an old lady but she has got to take responsibility for killing someone."

The 73-year-old admitted causing death by careless driving at Barkingside Magistrates Court on January 5.

She was due to be sentenced at the same court yesterday, but the case has now been committed to Snaresbrook Crown Court on January 30.

Mr Lane, a CCTV operator at bus depot company Go-ahead, in Northumberland Park, Tottenham, was the first of 12 cyclists to be killed in collisions in London in 2014.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
