A crack team of teenage boffins are on a mission to help students struggling with maths.

Some of the highest achieving Year 11 pupils at George Mitchell school in Leyton are now giving up their lunch breaks to tutor Year Six students.

The group of six, dubbed the A Team, are all predicted A* Grades at GCSE and are passionate about improving results for the school.

From this week, they will help the 10 and 11-year-olds with their exams, as well as prepare them for classes at secondary school - all in their own break time.

The mentoring programme is a part of a series of initiatives that has seen the Farmer Road school rated in the top one percent for progress in maths in the country.

George Mitcheel is also well above the national average in expected progress in Maths, according to a recent report by Raiseonline.

Head teacher Saeed Hussain said: "The A Team has been put together to ensure the exceptional progress that we have enjoyed in maths continues.

"It would be easy to pat ourselves on the back just because we are one of the top performing schools in the country.

"But being complacent is not how we became so successful. Our job now is to make sure we continue to perform to a very high level and the A Team is a part of that."

A Team member Mustafa Mahmood, 11, from Leyton, said: "I really like Maths so it is good that I can get lots of help.

“The A Team are all really clever so hopefully that will help me get better. When I am in Year 11 I want to be in the A Team."

Year 11 maths guru Veronika Bolshakova, 15, from Leyton, said: "I think that because we are also pupils the younger pupils can relate to us a little bit better than they would teachers. They are less intimidated and able to ask questions.

"Also, in class sometimes you have to wait until the teacher can help you. Having someone sit next to you that you can just ask makes a big difference."
