Children’s centres facing cutbacks and redundancies have been revealed.

Redbridge council is hoping to reduce the number of fully operational children’s centres it runs in the borough from 15 to eight.

A report due to be discussed by a council committee on Thursday reveals that in Wanstead and Woodford, three children's centres will classed as "spokes", meaning the core services they provide will be reduced.

These are Ray Lodge Children's Centre, in Ray Lodge Road, Woodford Green, Oakdale Children's Centre, in Oakdale Road, South Woodford, and Wanstead Children's Centre, in Wanstead Place.

The report says these will become a “delivery point for a range of activities delivered at specific times as identified by local need”.

Two centres in Wanstead and Woodford will be classed as "hubs", meaning they will be protected from cuts.

These are Orchard Children's Centre, in Liston Way, Woodford Green and Aldersbrook Children’s Centre, in Ingatestone Road, Wanstead.

The plans, which will axe 30 full-time posts across the borough, were first mentioned in the council’s budget proposals, published at the beginning of the year to cut the children’s centre staffing budget from £2.771m to £1.726m.

The report admits that the new system may force parents to move children to a different centre.

It said: “The proposed redesign of the children’s centres has been guided by the principle that families will continue to be able to access services, although some services may be offered at fewer locations and some services, both targeted and universal, may be delivered by partners.

“There will be no reduction in the targeted services provided to vulnerable families but some universal services parents may, in some cases, need to access the services at another children’s centre within the locality.

“This new model will ensure that no children’s centre in Redbridge would be closed.”

The proposals will be discussed at Redbridge council’s Children and Young People Service Committee on Thursday evening at the town hall in Ilford.
