The council will investigate how a dog was handed back to its owner with a severe leg injury after being in authority-run kennels.

Kaye Drennan’s pet Macie had to have her leg amputated last week after she was brought home after being missing for five days.

Macie, a three-year-old terrier cross, was found near Chingford and taken to a vet before being handed to the dog warden.

The pet was subsequently returned to her home in Enfield, but had suffered a deep cut on her leg, which was swollen and looked infected.

Ms Drennan took her to the vet where she paid £246 for her dog's treatment.

She called for an investigation into whether or not the injury was sustained while in council care, and if it was prior to that, why the dog was not treated at any point.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment: “We’re really pleased that Macie could be reunited with her owner.

“We have no record of her sustaining any injuries while she was in the kennels but have asked Ms Drennan to send us copies of the vet reports so we can look into how and when the injury was sustained, and take further action if appropriate.”
