An MP handed in a petition calling for action at a “nightmare” roundabout yesterday at Parliament.

Lee Scott, Conservative MP for Ilford North, presented the petition, signed by 676 people, to the House of Commons last night, for safety measures at Redbridge Roundabout.

The petition claims that the junction of Redbridge Lane East with the roundabout is “one of the busiest and most dangerous road junctions in Europe”.

The current traffic light phasing means only one or two cars have a chance to emerge at any one time.

Mr Scott said: “I am extremely concerned at the high level of reported accidents, averaging one per week, as well as the potential for fatal accidents at the Redbridge roundabout, which is a major junction of the M11, the north circular and the A12.

“There needs to be urgent action to stop what has become a nightmare for residents of the area and anyone travelling through it.”

More than 2,500 residents had previously signed a petition led by the Redbridge Roundabout Action Group (RedRAG), which was backed by Redbridge council in a full council debate in September.

The peititon, handed in yesterday, states: “We request that the House of Commons urges the government to direct Transport for London to install traffic lights at the Redbridge Lane East junction or to at least put measures in place (such as adjusting the existing traffic light timings) so that at least 6 or 8 cars can safely get onto the roundabout on each traffic light cycle.”

Transport for London (TfL) announced plans in September to launch an investigation into the roundabout, but campaigners have still not heard any developments since then.

A separate petition was presented to the Boris Johnson in December by London Assembly member Murad Qureshi.

But the Mayor of London has not yet formally responded to the petition.
