The world's biggest search engine has been criticised after an image of radical cleric Anjem Choudary appeared as the first result under a search for 'Muslim'. 

A photo of the Walthamstow-based hate preacher was seen to appear next to a Wikipedia entry following the search on Google. 

Google have confirmed they are "looking into it" and are expected to release a statement shortly.

Mr Choudary responded online by tweeting: 

This sparked a backlash from Twitter users who were quick to denounce his views and the alleged Google mishap. 

Choudary was one of eleven men arrested in September as part of an investigation into alleged support of the banned extremist group, al-Muhajiroun.

He was released on bail, and later claimed the arrest was "politically motivated". 

His controversial views have been widely condemned by mainstream Muslims, and his rallies across London have resulted in several arrests and prosecutions, including sectarian violence.
