Almost a third of takeaways in Waltham Forest are failing to meet hygiene standards, it has been revealed.

According to data from the Food Standards Authority, 32 per cent of the borough's 228 takeaways and sandwich shops require improvement, compared to the London average of 25 per cent.

Four takeaways across Walthamstow and Chingford scored the lowest possible rating of zero out of five, meaning they need urgent improvement.

These were Kebabish Original in Chingford Mount Road, Chingford, Spice E4 in Hale End Road, Highams Park, Ginger in Forest Road, Walthamstow, and Chick Inn in Hoe Street, Walthamstow.

During a routine inspection at Spice E4 in September, cockroaches were discovered on the floor and overall conditions were described as "filthy".

The takeaway is now under new management and has changed its name to the Taste of India.

In total, 72 of the 228 takeaways in the borough had a rating of zero to two, with 39 given a score of 1.

Restaurants performed slightly better with 296 out of the 366 having a rating of three and above.

Pubs in Waltham Forest outperformed restaurants, cafes and takeaways with 83 per cent of them having good or very good food hygiene.

Overall, 81 per cent of restaurants were either generally satisfactory, good or very good.

On the other hand hygeine standards in Redbridge were rated the best in London.

Every takeaway in Wanstead and Woodford has a rating of 3 or above, at least generally satisfactory, and the only outlets to fall below this standard were in Ilford.

The worst borough was Enfield, followed by Hackney, Islington, Harrow, Newham, Lewisham and Ealing.

The Food Standards Agency figures were collated by company Caelum Contracts.
