An ice cream seller of 30 years is in the running to be crowned the best in the business.
Robert Thompson, 46, is well known in Waltham Abbey after selling treats in Waltham Abbey since he was a teenager.
Mr Thompson has been placed on a shortlist of three vendors for the Ice Cream Mobiler of the Year award.
He was nominated through his membership of industry group Ice Cream Alliance.
Mr Thompson drives a distinctive yellow van and is also the proud owner of a vintage 1954 Morris J-Type.
He said: “I think I stand out because I give value for money in a nice clean van.
“I see others going round in their crusty vans and charging a lot of money, it’s not the best.”
"I believe ice cream vans have a future in the community so long as you support the community which you serve, watching my customer's families grow throughout the years and giving the personal touch and conversation which large shops and supermarkets can’t provide."
Mr Thompson admits he has faced challenges with increased pressure to follow a healthy lifestyle.
He added: “The government and the media have started trying to tell young people what to eat but I have found teenagers don’t really eat ice cream anymore.
“All they think about is the gym, their mobile phones and worry about their six-packs.
“I think life is short and you should treat yourself occasionally - you just can’t beat a 99!”
The winner will be announced at the Ice Cream Alliance annual Expo held in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, on Wednesday.
