Plans for a children’s playground in a “neglected estate" are being reconsidered by Redbridge council.

There are currently no public playgrounds on the Aldersbrook estate in Wanstead, with families forced to walk 45 minutes into Wanstead every day to use facilities in Christchurch Green.

Parents have long called for a new playground in the area, but no agreement has so far been reached on any of the proposed sites.

But Labour council leader Jas Athwal agreed to look into building one At Redbridge council’s local forum at Wanstead Library, in Spratt Hall Road, yesterday.

CHe said: “It is true there is facilities are completely lacking in the Aldersbrook area.

"It is really good that this has been brought to our attention.

“I guarantee  I will be having conversations and looking at what we can do in that part of Wanstead, if there is little access to facilities then something needs to be done and we will look at funding with Greater London Authority or the City of London.”

Gill James, of Aldersbrook Families Association, campaigned for over a decade on the issue, but plans were scrapped in 2011.

She said: “There are not a lot of facilities run by the council on this side of Wanstead, there is a library and that is it.

“It would be great if they could provide us with something for young mums by funding a playground.”

At the meeting, Conservative Cllr Michelle Dunn, of Wanstead ward, said she was pessimistic that a deal could be reached.

She said: “We fought for facilities for 10 years or so and we had no luck, City of London rejected our proposals on its land, the council had no funding available.

“We had a consultation for a playground in Empress Avenue but no one in the area supported it so while it is a neglected estate for ten years we keep reaching stumbling blocks.”
