Roads in an area of Walthamstow will undergo a major programme of re-organisation next month as the council paves the way for the mini Holland cycling scheme.

Earlier this month the council’s cabinet signed off on £30m plans to improve roads for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as improving air quality and reducing rat running.

The council was one of three London boroughs to win cash from Transport for London early in 2014 for the scheme.

Following the decision, last week, the Walthamstow Village area improvement scheme will begin next month.

Road closures will be introduced, along with new no entries and traffic will be re-directed along some roads.

However, the local authority say space will be provided to allow vehicles to turn around, should they take a wrong turn.

Orford Road will be closed between 10am and 10pm Monday to Sunday for vehicles other than the W12 bus – the route of which will remain unchaged.

Outside of the restricted zone traffic will travel one-way eastbound and bays will be provided for loading and disabled badge holders on Orford Road.

The council’s plans also include ‘Copenhagen’ style crossings will be introduced at key locations and the junction on Barclay Road with Shernhall Street will be improved.

There will be a wider pavement and reduced crossing distance on Addison Road at the junction with Shernhall Street and street lighting will be improved.

The scheme will also be enforced by CCTV cameras.

Councillor Clyde Loakes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment said: “All feedback that has been received, both from the public consultation and the two week trial held last year, has been used to shape the project.

“It has been the most extensive engagement process our Highways and Infrastructure team have run to date.”

The rest of the mini Holland programme will be considered by the cabinet later this year for other areas of the borough, including a major cycle route through Leyton.

There will be a programme of tree planting across the Village, improvements to street lighting and the footpath along Barclay Path.

The public square in Eden Road will also be improved, as well as paved areas outside shops in Grove Road.
