A school which is undergoing an £11 million expansion to increase its pupil intake has submitted plans to build a new gym centre and a second three-storey creative arts block.

The regulatory committee at Redbridge council will decide next Wednesday whether or not to grant Woodbridge High School, in St Barnabas Road, permission.

Controversial plans to build a three-storey building and play area were approved in April of last year, but the Woodford Green school withdrew planning to build a gym after its plans were deferred in July.

Now, the school, which aims to accommodate 420 extra pupils, hopes to build the single-storey gym with cycle storage facilities, and a second three-storey creative arts building with a performance hall.

If granted, the gym will be used as temporary classroom space for the first year starting this July to accommodate the extra pupils as the proposed new creative arts block is being developed.

The council has received 11 objections from residents living in Mallards Road, St Barnabas Road, Wynndale Road and Cranbrook Road who fear the new-builds will lead to a loss of privacy, increased noise and pollution and additional parking problems.

Once the site is completed, the school population will rise to 1,970 with an additional 21 staff.

Works to start building the approved three-storey building and play area stalled last year after a dispute over contractor payments.

The setback came after the contractor told the council it could not carry out the project at the cost they had initially stated when bidding for the contract.

Kier contractors have now been appointed to carry out the works.

Woodbridge aims to use the two three-storey buildings for art, drama, history music and ICT.
