A set of community tennis courts are to receive a long "overdue" facelift after securing half a million pounds worth of investment.

The six outdoor courts at Ridgeway Park in Peel Close, Chingford, are being upgraded by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) in conjunction with Waltham Forest council to include LED floodlights and new netting.

Users will be able to play for an extra four hours after dark during the winter months as the floodlights will be in use until 9.30pm during weekdays and 8pm on weekends.

The courts are free to use at any time and it is hoped the new facilities will encourage schoolchildren and residents to take up what is often considered an elite sport.

Harley Hicks, 24, of College Gardens, Chingford, started playing tennis aged 11 and plays at Ridgeway Park once a week with friend Mark Osborne.

He said: "Investment is overdue really. The nets have got holes in them and like Lloyd Park, it closes after dark.

"I hope the refurbishment will create awareness of what facilities are on offer and will hopefully get younger people trying it out.

"Playing at an indoor tennis court is quite expensive, so as long as they keep it affordable and don't try to live up to the rich-stereo-type then I'm happy."

Tennis enthusiasts, Endlebury ward councillor Caroline Erics and MP Iain Duncan Smith were at the court on Friday where they entered into a rally with Mr Hicks and Mr Osborne.

Cllr Erics said: "I'm thrilled that Ridgeway Park has secured investment through the LTA to develop tennis facilities for constituents and school children in Endlebury Ward.

"There will be free access for local school children and opportunities for all enthusiastic constituents to develop their game, play and compete".

Mr Duncan Smith hopes the "great community asset" will encourage a healthier lifestyle for local residents.

Planning for the £500,000 investment was approved on February 4.
