A primary school is closed for a second day after a routine inspection led to concerns over the quality of the water supply.

Parents and carers were called to collect children from Nightingale Primary School in South Woodford yesterday afternoon after headteacher Caz Langbridge decided to close the Ashbourne Avenue site as a health and safety precaution.

A brief text was sent to parents at around 2pm stating there was a "water quality issue" and requesting pupils were collected as soon as possible.

In a statement, Ms Langbridge said: "The health and safety of your child is always paramount both to Nightingale Primary School and to Redbridge Council.

"As part of our health and safety procedures the water is regularly tested by the council to ensure it meets all the high standards you would expect.

"The latest test to the water showed that some work was needed to ensure it meets those high standards and therefore we have taken the decision to close the school until further notice as a precaution.

"Obviously any drop in the quality of the school’s water supply is taken seriously and our priority will be to take action to bring it up to a higher quality as soon as possible."

Wanstead Youth Centre in Elmcroft Avenue backs onto the school playground.

The centre was closed in May 2013 for two weeks after the council discovered the potentially harmful Legionella bacteria in the water system during a routine inspection.

A 35-year-old mother whose seven-year-old daughter attends the school, and wished to remain anonymous claimed she was told by staff yesterday that "high levels of bacteria" had been found.

An update by Ms Langridge is due this morning.
