The potentially harmful bacteria Legionella has been found in the water supply system at a primary school, it has emerged.

Nightingale Primary School in South Woodford, was closed yesterday afternoon after a routine inspection led to concerns over the quality of the supply.

The bacteria, which can cause Legionaires' disease or a mild flu-like illness called Pontiac fever, was found in at least two buildings.

A spokesman for Redbridge council, said: "A routine check at Nightingale Primary School produced results that identified Legionella as being present in two outlets in the school and that some action was required.

"Legionella bacteria are commonly found in water systems and are considered to be low risk when managed correctly.

"As a precautionary measure the school was closed. Work began immediately and continued through the night so that the school could reopen as soon as possible.

"The school has not had any reported illness caused by its water supply."

The school said it anticipates it will re-open on Thursday morning.

He added: "Redbridge Council is following the guidance issued by the Health & Safety Executive and is liaising with Public Health England to ensure that there are no risks to pupils or staff."

Parents and carers were sent a text at around 2pm yesterday from the school requesting pupils were collected as soon as possible.

Wanstead Youth Centre, which backs onto the school playground in Elmcroft Avenue, was closed in May 2013 for three weeks after Legionella bacteria was discovered in the water system.
