Detailed proposals to revitalise a Grade II listed park into “one of the finest in east London” have been revealed.

Feedback Fortnight was launched yesterday evening for the improvements to Wanstead Park, which was the garden for mansion Wanstead House in the 17th and early 18th centuries.

City of London Corporation’s proposals, with work due to start next year, include extensive work to Heronry Pond, which would see it completely relined, wildlife habitats restored and boating reintroduced.

The Temple is set to be refurbished into a “visitor hub” with a new cafe and the main entrances of the park will be improved with new signage and maps installed.

The site of the old mansion, demolished in the 19th century, is due to become a tourist site in itself with signs detailing its size and history.

There are also plans for the park to be used for self-guided tours with a smartphone app, and generating income with open air cinema and concerts.

The document says: “It has the potential to become one of the finest parks in East London, a unique and stunning landscape combining a sense of wilderness, tranquillity and experience of nature with spaces for fun, entertainment and getting active outdoors.

“A revitalised Wanstead Park could reveal and celebrate the many unique aspects of its special landscape, welcoming all local people and visitors from further afield.”

The park, on English Heritage’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest, was placed on its “at risk” register in 2009.

Dwight Wood, Chairman of the Friends of Wanstead Parklands, said he was delighted with the proposals.

He said: “The City of London has helped create our optimism about a successful future and we are excited about a super outcome for our important nationally important Grade ll park.”

People will be able to have their say on proposals until March 8.

Plans can be viewed at Wanstead House, in The Green, until March 2, and at Wanstead Golf Club, in Overton Drive, from March 3 to March 8.
