An expert on the history of Wanstead Park led a tour of its grounds today (February 26).
Georgina Green, who wrote Epping Forest through the Ages in 1982, talked about the history of the park and some of the notable figures in its development in the two-hour walk.
The park, which saw the influence of famous landscape designer Humphry Repton when he was hired to convert it into a garden for the old Wanstead House mansion in 1814, though the mansion was demolished just 11 years later.
It was later bought by the City of London Corporation and opened to the public in 1882.
The Friends of Epping Forest event came just days after detailed plans to turn Wanstead Park into “one of the finest in east London” were revealed by the City of London Corporation.
