Boris Johnson has agreed to meet an MP in a long-running campaign for safety improvements for a “dangerous” roundabout.

Earlier this month, Lee Scott, Conservative MP for Ilford North, handed in a 676-strong petition calling for safety measures at Redbridge Roundabout to the House of Commons.

The petition claimed that the junction of Redbridge Lane East with the roundabout is “one of the busiest and most dangerous road junctions in Europe”.

A separate petition was presented to the Mayor of London in December by London Assembly member Murad Qureshi.

This month Lee Scott confirmed he would be meeting with Boris, with a date set to be announced.

More than 2,500 residents had previously signed a petition led by the Redbridge Roundabout Action Group (RedRAG), which was backed by Redbridge council in a full council debate in September.

It is claiming that the current traffic light phasing means only one or two cars have a chance to emerge at any one time.

Campaigners are calling for Transport for London (TfL) to install traffic lights at the Redbridge Lane East junction or to put measures in place so that at least 6 or 8 cars can safely get onto the roundabout on each traffic light cycle.

It was revealed last year that there was an average of one accident a week at the major junction of the M11, the north circular and the A12.

TfL announced plans in September to launch an investigation into the roundabout, but nothing has been heard since then.
