A delicatessen has been granted permission to sell alcohol, despite objections from over 30 nearby homes.

Director of the Made in Portugal Delicatessen, Anabela Das Neves Canhestros, applied for a licence to serve booze during the day at her business in Shernhall Street, Walthamstow.

The application was granted by the licensing committee at Waltham Forest council on Tuesday (February 24).

The shop can now serve alcohol, for consumption on and off of the premises, from 8am until 8pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9am until 6pm on a Sunday.

Letters of objection, written by the next door shop owner Nilgun Kara and signed by neighbours, were handed to the council – but the committee saw no reason to deny permission.

Mr Kara spoke at the meeting to try to persuade the council – he claimed in his letter there could be an increase in anti-social behaviour.

However, there were no objections from the emergency services or other professional bodies.

Ms Das Neves Canhestros has vowed to participate in a local pub watch scheme and keep all staff up to date with legislation and training, as well as operating with CCTV and a challenge 25 scheme in place.
