A project is asking people for their opinions on whether they view Redbridge as being part of London or Essex.

The joining of Wanstead and Woodford with Ilford and parts of Dagenham led to the creation of the London Borough of Redbridge in 1965.

As part of the 50th anniversary of the borough, history group Eastside Community Heritage is calling on people to take part in the oral history project, Redbridge: London or Essex?

The Ilford-based group is planning to hold an exhibition of stories and recollections in June.

Judith Garfield, executive director, said: “Growing up in South Woodford and living in Wanstead there is always confusion over whether it is London or Essex.

“I would say it is London now but I was an Essex girl growing up, so it can be confusing and a bit disconcerting for people.

“It is a generational thing so anyone who lived in Wanstead and Woodford before it became London will obviously still see it as Essex at heart.

“With The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) on television, I think the reputation of people from the county has been affected, there is a certain amount of snobbery about it.

“I don’t think it is a negative thing personally but we are interested in people getting in touch and letting us know their opinions and any recollections they have about the change.
