The business community is being asked to pledge their support in helping to stamp out child sexual exploitation (CSE).

Redbridge police and council are following in the footsteps of Waltham Forest, which was the first London borough to launch the 'say something if you see something' campaign back in October.

Between July 2013 and December 2014, the the council received 90 reports from professionals and the public regarding a young person being abused or at risk of CSE.

As part of Operation Makesafe, letters and publicity materials are being sent to hotels, B&Bs, other venues licensed to sell alcohol and taxi firms - businesses which come into contact with victims of CSE.

CSE remains an issue that is "seriously under-reported" according to the police as many children and young people do not see themselves as victims and are therefore unlikely to report the abuse.

Council leader councillor Jas Athwal, said: "We are aware that there have been failings at other authorities regarding CSE and we are keen in Redbridge to get on the front foot and stand up as one community to show it won’t be tolerated.

"The effects of CSE can be devastating and can detrimentally impact a child’s health, education and adult life.

"Businesses are in a unique position to be an extra pair of eyes and ears when it comes to the detection of this horrific crime and by pledging to stand with us they send a strong message to those who would take part in such terrible behaviour.

"I would encourage all of our businesses to show their support and pledge their commitment."
