A new “park and ride” could serve commuters in a bid to reduce congestion.

Epping Forest district council is compiling a report on the possibility of using parts of North Weald airfield as a weekday car park, which could serve a dedicated bus service travelling to Epping underground station.

The Tube car park in Epping serves large numbers of workers trying to access the Central Line, and it is often at full capacity early in the morning.

Cars belonging to Transport for London employees are also parked on the station’s access road, making it difficult to access for members of the public.

The council has previously discussed the possibility of parking at the airfield, which is a public asset, as well as considering housing developments and other plans.

The report is due at the end of March and will consider the feasibility of the plans, with councillors keen to raise money from the airfield which is viewed as one of the council’s most valuable assets.
