Hundreds of new homes have been given the go-ahead at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park site.

Two new neighbourhoods containing 1,500 new homes will be built at the Stratford Park by 2023, six years ahead of the original master plan.

Mayor Boris Johnson and the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) have appointed Places for People and Balfour Beatty to construct the homes, 30 per cent of which will be affordable housing and 500 private.

The East Wick neighbourhood of 850 townhouses, mews, studios and flats will be developed to the west of the park close to existing communities in Hackney Wick and Fish Island.

Sweetwater in the south-west of the park near the Old Ford interchange and Copper Box Arena will provide 650 new studios, apartment and family homes with private gardens.

A new primary school, two nurseries and a health centre will be built on the site.

Mr Johnson, said: "This is the most successful and fastest growing city anywhere in Europe, and it is absolutely vital we provide thousands of new houses to allow people to live close to their places of work.

"I am thrilled to confirm we have now appointed high quality developers to help bring forward plans for these important new neighbourhoods on our iconic Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, a whopping six years ahead of target."

Chief executive David Goldstone of the LLDC, added: "East Wick and Sweetwater will exemplify the best of London’s residential architecture and we hope it can provide a model for speeding up delivery across London."
