Five scanners are due to be introduced by Redbridge council this month to tackle housing fraud.
The £25,250 ID scanners will be rolled out in the Housing Advice Centre in Clements Road, Ilford, and Orchard Housing Office in Broadmead Road, Woodford Green.
It is hoped the scanners will prevent council homes being claimed fraudulently, identify fraudulent homelessness applications and illegal sub-letting of council homes.
The ID scanners, which will go online this month, will be used to authenticate passports, European identity cards and driving licences.
