The Home Secretary praised a security firm’s efforts in tackling the problem of people working illegally in the industry during a visit on Friday (February 27).

Theresa May congratulated H&M Security Services in Larkshall Road, Highams Park, on its strict vetting procedures, which the firm says has identified 70 working illegally in the UK in the last decade.

Established 15 years ago, the company provides security guards and concierge, CCTV and intruder alarm monitoring services for clients including Network Rail and the NHS.

Managing Director Ian Henderson said the security industry is often targeted by illegal workers and criminals.

He said: "We have been instrumental in deterring people who have no right to work in the UK.

"Our vetting processes go above and beyond the run of the mill.

“It is done thoroughly and staff undergo constant training.

"People who have a dodgy past want inside knowledge and therefore try to get into the security industry.

"The industry is also targeted by people who cannot find casual work, including illegal immigrants."

The Home Secretary was presented with flowers and a plate of the Royal Highland Fusiliers, who Mr Henderson had fought with during his time with the British Army.

Mrs May said: "It was good to meet the staff and management at H&M Security.

“They are a credit to the industry that they represent."
