A Paralympic gold medallist has received an award for his work as a wheelchair sports coach.

Richard Chiassaro’s commitment to supporting young people at the All Ability Sports and Leisure club in Hillcrest Way, Epping, has been honoured with the Jack Petchey Leader Award.

The Paralympic star, who is ranked number one in the UK for 200m wheelchair racing and won a gold medal at the 2012 games, works as a coach at the sports club.

All Ability Sports and Leisure aims to inspire people with disabilities to have active lifestyles for a more inclusive sports community and a healthier community in general.

Mr Chiassaro said: “I love seeing the young people that I coach improving and having fun.

“I consider myself their friend, not just their coach.”

Helen Offord from All Ability Sports and Leisure said: “Richard has been a fantastic role model for all our members.

“He has given so much commitment to helping improve skill level for wheelchair racing and for wheelchair basketball.

“He has trained so hard.”

The award was given by the Jack Petchey Foundation, which was established 15 years ago to support and recognise the positive contributions young people make to society.
