A garage will be able to park its cars in a road next to the grass verges earmarked for a ban, it has been announced.

Redbridge council is planning to include the grass verges in a parking ban in Hermon Hill, first implemented in early 2013 from 8.30am to 6.30pm.

It was designed to stop commuters parking in the road that stretches from Wanstead to South Woodford, though there was a small stretch of grass verges left free of restrictions.

James Palmer, who owns Dipsticks Tyres and Exhausts Garage, uses these grass verges to leave cars which come in for an MOT, and he feared a ban would leave him with no where to put the cars.

But Redbridge council has assured that parking will still be available with cars able to be parked with four wheels on the road next to the grass verges instead.

It said the ban on the grass verges was due complaints about the poor condition caused by cars.

A council spokeswoman said: “The council has received numerous complaints about the condition of the grass verges in Hermon Hill and therefore, as part of the borough’s pavement parking review, we plan to stop allowing motorists to park on the verges and instead allow them to park with four wheels on the carriageway.

“This would mean that motorists would still be able to park in the area and that the grass verges would be able to thrive.

“More information about these plans will be made available to residents as the details are developed.”

People have until March 26 to air their views on plans.
