The Chairman of the trust which runs Whipps Cross Hospital has announced his intention to leave his role, making him the third senior member of staff to resign in the last two months.

Sir Stephen O'Brien, who will leave his position on the trust's board after three years at the end of the month, said he will "focus on other interests" in the field of mental health.

Earlier this year, chief executive Peter Morris and chief nurse Professor Kay Riley both stepped down from the country's largest trust, which has a financial deficit of around £64million.

The results of a Care Quality Commission inspection of Whipps Cross Hospital are due to be published later this year.

Announcing his departure, Sir Stephen said: “I am honoured to have been a part of Barts Health.

“I am proud to have worked closely with so many inspirational and passionate people who are deeply committed to tackling the healthcare needs of east London and changing lives for the better.

“I am sure that Barts Health will continue the collaborative approach to providing the best possible care for our patients, not only the current population but for future generations.”

Director of the trust's delivery and development, Alwen Williams, paid tribute to his colleague.

He said: "Sir Stephen has held leadership roles in the local NHS since 2005 and we would like to thank him for the unwavering commitment he has shown to health services in East London throughout this time.”
