A primary school have made solar eclipse projectors ahead of tomorrow's event.

Braeside Infant and Junior School in Palmerston Road, Buckhurst Hill, made the contraptions from cardboard tubes, tin foil and baking paper today (March 19) ahead of tomorrow's (March 20) solar eclipse, which is the first since 1999, as part of their British Science Week studies.

More than 40 pupils at the school created the projectors, which will allow them to see the outline of the eclipse safely without looking at the sun, following other practical projects including making and flying kites, friction experiments and hatching ducklings.

The three to 11-year-olds have also been learning about famous women scientists.

Senior teacher Gretchen Copeman said: "today the girls have been learning about viewing the solar eclipse safely.

"They have created projectors which will allow the children to view the eclipse from a distance and without looking at the sun.

"The project went very well and we are very pleased.

"We are looking forward to trying out the projectors under staff supervision tomorrow morning.

"Fingers crossed there will be no clouds."
