The founders of a threatened rehabilitation centre have made an impassioned plea for funds.

Russell Brand and MP Iain Duncan Smith have both backed the campaign to raise £160,000 needed to maintain services at 1NE in The Broadway, Woodford Green.

Manager Fiona Dunwoodie and her mother Dorothy set up the centre in 1987.

It helps 100 people each year with abstinence-based treatment for alcohol or drug addiction.

But is due to be closed next Tuesday after its council funding was stopped as the centre failed to win a new contract.

The centre claims the new Ilford-based service will not provide support for relatives and children.

In the video, an emotional Fiona says: "It is just not right.

"The clients don't want to leave, we have really strong relationships with them.

"They are terrified.

"They said 'this is our lives you are mucking about with, you are playing with our lives'."

Visiting the Woodford Green rehab centre on Friday, Iain Duncan Smith said he was doing all he could to keep the service open.

He said: “I have arranged for the Tottenham Hotspur FC Foundation to visit 1NE to see if they might be able to provide any funding.

"I have also written to the council in very strong terms to convey what an essential service 1NE provides to the local community and how it would be a real blow to many families if it was forced to close.”

A Redbridge council spokeswoman said that while the closure was regrettable, the new system would mean more people are treated.
