A centre supporting disabled people facing closure has hit back at council claims it is missing targets.

The Waltham Forest Disability Resource Centre will lose its council funding from next month as part of the latest round of town hall cuts.

More than 100 disabled people and their families are set to be affected.

Councillor Angie Bean, cabinet member for adult services, said the centre has been missing targets since 2011, but centre bosses denied this.

Manager Peri Stanley said: “Waltham Forest Disability Resource Centre has actually achieved 97.6 per cent of its current attendance target for the first three quarters of the grant year.

"For our 2014/15 Conditional Grant, we were given the target of providing 4,800 activity places for disabled people and we expect to achieve 100 per cent.

“For 22 years, while based centrally in Warner Road, Walthamstow, the organisation not only met its user targets, but was actually oversubscribed.

Ms Stanley admits the centre did face difficulties in 2011 after the council relocated the service and door-to-door transport was cut by half.

A fee had to be re-introduced, which further impacted attendance figures, she said.

The centre helps people use community facilities and learn new skills, while providing a comfortable social setting.

“Our latest set of monitoring statistics will show that our attendance figures are increasing and are on line to meet our targets," Ms Stanley added.

“For the six months from July to December 2014, our activity attendance figures increased by more than 22 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year."

Waltham Forest council has been approached for comment.
