A new exhibition has been launched showing the impact of the First World War on Africa.

Today marks the opening of the African Heritage and Education Centre (AHEC) 'Forgotten History' project at the George Mitchell Secondary School in Farmer Road, Leyton.

The project aims to show the impact of the First World War on boundary changes of African territories using maps from the British Royal Geographical Society released as the continent was divided up by Western powers.

Countries, now known as Kenya, are marked as British East Africa and whole regions described as ‘Conquered East Africa’ in the official maps.

The exhibition displays the transformation of African states from the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 to post war colonies,  and ultimately to independence.

Christine Borsah director of AHEC said: “A lot has been said about the First World War but there is nothing about African involvement.

“The war had a huge effect on the people of Africa and this is a great opportunity for young people to learn about it.”

'Forgotten History' will remain on display at the school for six months, for more information click here.
