With less than six week to go before the nation heads to the polls, residents are being invited to quiz candidates hoping to win a Conservative safe seat.

A group representing Christian, Jewish, Muslim and non-faith groups have formally announced a hustings for Chingford and Woodford Green constituency.

Several candidates have already confirmed their attendance for the event taking place on April 27 at Woodford Memorial Hall in High Road, South Woodford.

The event is being marketed by the group as an opportunity for all members of the local community to engage in the election.

The notion was first put forward by Reverend Ian Tarrant of St' Mary's Church in High Road, South Woodford.

Churchgoer of group member James Nunn, 21, of Woodford Green, said: "This is about a public interview for the job.

"We think democracy only works if people are engaged and we expect it could get messy on the night."

Those stepping up to the challenge include Liberal Democrat candidate, Anne Crook, Bilal Mahmood for Labour, UKIP's Freddy Vachha, Class War's Lisa McKenzie and Rebecca Tully of the Green Party.

MP since 1992, Iain Duncan Smith is yet to say whether he will definitely take part but told the Guardian: "I look forward to hustings during the campaign, I enjoy them.

"Diary permitting I will do my best to be there."

It is being chaired by Rev Tarrant, with the assistance of Rabbi Richard Jacobi from Woodford Liberal Synagogue.

The two-hour debate starting at 7.30pm will be split into two sections with the first hour comprising of the most popular questions sent in by the public and the remaining hour is questions from the floor.

Questions can be submitted to the hustings group by post to Woodford Memorial Hall or using Twitter @cwghustings15, email cwghustings15@outlook.com and Facebook 'cwghustings2015'.

The deadline for submitting questions is April 20.

It is ticket-only event so anyone wishing to attend should apply to the group using the details above by midday on April 13.

There is a chance the location could change to a bigger venue nearer the time.
