REDBRIDGE Arts Council is appealing for help in a fight to save local arts and culture.

The RAC relies on a £42,000 annual grant from Redbridge Council which could be cut by £10,000 this year, £20,000 next year and £30,000 thereafter.

The cabinet recommendation set out in the council's budget proposals would leave no grant at all for the RAC in three years time.

The independent charity uses the money to pay £20,000 to the council for space in the Town Hall and for the part-time provision of secretarial help, leaving £22,000 to promote arts and culture in Redbridge.

The RAC has 60 member organisations ranging from orchestras to camera clubs, historical societies and National Trust groups. It allocates small cash grants to promote and develop arts and culture, and provides meeting places, focus groups, exhibitions, publicity and an events guide.

The RAC maintains the money saved in budget cuts will be lost in general council funds, and the arts services will not be replaced.

The charity is appealing for urgent help and has launched a petition to be presented to the council before the budget proposals are put before the council on March 1.
