Construction on the £11.3m expansion of a high performing grammar school is set to take place this summer.

Redbridge council in February agreed to the plan to implement an additional 300 places at Woodford County High School for Girls in High Road, Woodford Green.

Now, subject to cabinet agreeing to the multi-million pound contract with Kier Construction Ltd next week, a council report reveals that construction will start as early as this summer.

The report says: "The expansions are to be implemented from September 2016. This requires construction works to be completed to meet this programme. Currently to meet this programme construction needs to have started by summer 2015."

The Woodford Green grammar school, rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted, will build a 14 lab purpose-built science block as well as a new general teaching facility.

An additional £11m has also been set aside for Ilford County High School for Boys in Fremantle Road, Ilford, which will also see an expansion by 300 pupils.

A consultation held last year found that of the 392 responses, 79 per cent of people supported the school’s expansion.

The school will take on an extra 60 places in Year 7 each year, starting in September 2016.

In February this year, Woodbridge High School, in Saint Barnabas Road, Woodford Green, was given the go-ahead for a £11.6m expansion in order to expand by an extra 300 pupils.

Cabinet looks set to rubberstamp a deal with Kier Construction Ltd on Tuesday evening at Redbridge town hall, in Ilford.
